Technologies for crisis management in the event of a disaster

Earthquakes occur every day in Europe. In July 2019, no fewer than 27 earthquakes with a magnitude of between four and five on the Richter scale were detected, most of them in south-eastern Europe. The EU’s DRIVER+ project (Driving Innovation in Crisis Management for European Resilience) conducted a comprehensive disaster management exercise to address this. It was held from 12 to 14 September 2019 in the Eisenerz region of Austria, with a view to strengthening crisis management capabilities. The deployment of innovative developments and technologies was tested within the context of an earthquake scenario and evaluated by experts. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) generated real-time aerial images to provide essential support for position detection and rescue logistics.

DLR supports emergency services during historic fires in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a state in the northeast of Germany, is currently experiencing the worst forest fires in its history. On 2 July 2019, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) Institute of Optical Sensor Systems used a special version of the Modular Aerial Camera System (MACS) to map large parts of the forest fires in the military training area near Lübtheen.

DLR strengthens Germany as a technology location with seven new institutes

DLR tests innovative crisis management solutions in The Hague

A comprehensive flood scenario was simulated in The Hague from 22 to 23 May 2019 as part of the Driving Innovation in Crisis Management for European Resilience (DRIVER+) project. Five innovative solutions were evaluated.

Landing on the deck of a ship – DLR continues its research into maritime helicopter missions

The HEDELA (HElicopter DEck Landing Assistance) project is aimed at investigating, evaluating and improving maritime helicopter missions. It is a joint effort by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and the Fuhlendorf flight squadron of the German Federal Police. The project started in March 2019.
